I was born and raised in Northern VA and have always had a fascination with wildlife. While aquatic life was always my favorite part of nature, I loved seeing wildlife of any type. However, my first super fascination with birds started one summer night when I happened across a group of barred owls hooting at each other. After that, I became obsessed with owls (and still very much am :P)
Years after my owl encounter, I decided to join an online photography class as an elective on The Potter's School, an online Christian school. I received my first real camera (a Nikon D3400) along with a two lenses, one of what was a 70-300mm telephoto. I got into bird photography shortly thereafter. I would compare my experience with getting into it with falling in love: you have no idea when or how it started but you know it's there. I honestly don't remember exactly when or how I started prioritizing birds to photograph, just one day I realized I was photographing birds and I liked it! (I later went through my photos and dated it to possibly around December 2020-January 2021ish at the latest :P) After that I just started recognizing bird calls out in the field and watching videos on YouTube by channels like LeslieTheBirdNerd (go chech her out here, she's really cool :P) and I started realizing how fascinating these incredible creatures were.
Today I am an avid bird photographer and am always keeping and eye and an ear out for good places to photograph them. My favorite types of birds are owls and woodpeckers, but as far as specific birds go I love Pileateds, all owls, blue jays, and chickadees.
